Bangladesh in Crisis: Internet Blackout Amid Violent Protests and Government Crackdown

Official death tolls crossing 125 on Saturday 20 July 2024, Bangladesh still has no internet connection or a viable telecommunication service since 9 pm 18 July.

A protest for quota reformation started peacefully weeks before but soon turned into chaos and filled with violence when several students were brutally assaulted and beaten by BSL, a political party of current government. The students then defended themselves against the violence of the political party and soon it became a blood bath when police shot unarmed peaceful protester Abu Sayeed 4 times to death. 6 deaths were confirmed on the first day.

The quota reformation protest went beyond the cause as students and general people of Bangladesh were deeply affected by police shooting on a peaceful protest. Since then, government forces have been trying to prevent students and people from expressing their opinions and shut the internet.

Bangladesh since then has been isolated from rest of the world when millions of migrants can’t get in touch with their loved ones and calls the government “autocratic” and “dictator”. We have seen multiple protests and ongoing protests for the government to step down from all over the world where migrants have been protesting in front of the Bangladeshi embassies and other places.

The party leader Sheikh Hasina who has been in the government for 15 years have been reported for unfair elections and installing a corrupt system around her. From 20 July midnight, Bangladeshi military has been deployed without any magistracy power.
